I started Lauren Vapes to share “vaping thoughts and reviews.” Thus far, I’ve focused primarily on reviews… But I can hold back my thoughts no longer!
There’s a BIG problem in the vaping world, and I’m finally prepared to talk about it.
Certain groups of individuals against fun and freedom are trying to take away our right to vape. This has been an issue for a while now, and it’s only growing.
Vaping Restrictions on a Government Level
Last year, the FDA finalized their plan to put vaping under their authority. In addition to restricting sales to minors (which most states did on their own anyway), each new vape product now has to go through the FDA’s strict approval process.
This process is long and difficult. Not to mention EACH product needs a separate application — an application that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars (sometimes millions!).
Basically, the FDA is now regulating vaping products as they would tobacco products — even though vape juices contain ZERO tobacco in them. In fact, many new vape juices don’t even use nicotine derived from tobacco AT ALL, instead opting to get their nicotine from eggplants, potatoes, or synthetic properties.
Due to the high prices demanded by the FDA, fewer and fewer new vaping products are hitting the market, and many small business owners have faded away into bankruptcy.
Not only does this mean that we have fewer innovations in the vaping world (no fun!), but these policies could also slow the decline of traditional cigarette usage. To put it simply: If vaping products aren’t available as harm reduction devices, smokers looking to quit can’t buy or use them!
Essentially, the FDA is driving smokers back to harmful cigarettes as their form of nicotine consumption. But why would they do that? In this recent report from Public Health England, experts revealed that vaping is 95-99% safer than smoking. In fact, the researchers also suggested that we could save 76,000 lives per year by convincing smokers to switch to vaping!
The answer, in my opinion, is government greed.
The Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement and How It’s Harming Vapers
Way back in 1998, the government came up with the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, or MSA for short.
Through the MSA, states receive millions of dollars each year from Big Tobacco. In exchange, these states cover Big Tobacco’s behind should a smoking-related lawsuit occur. Since such lawsuits are few and far between, the states get to keep the bulk of that money each and every year.
The government and other greedy gimme-gimmes LOATHE vaping because it doesn’t fall under the umbrella of “Big Tobacco” (because there’s ZERO tobacco involved!) and, therefore, the vaping industry does not have to pay the yearly sum of money demanded by the MSA.
Of course, all that is changing now that the FDA is getting involved and regulating vaping goods as tobacco products.
States have also gotten in on the action, writing up their OWN laws in regard to how vaping products and businesses are managed. This is particularly true in my home state of California.
Here in California, the legal smoking age went from 18 to 21 earlier last year, and so did the legal vaping age. Not to mention the disastrous Democrat-backed Proposition 56! Thanks to prop 56, the tobacco tax in California went from $0.86 to $2.00 — and California Dems decided that tax should apply to vaping products as well. Thus, vaping products here in California are outrageously expensive and hard to obtain. NOT good news for smokers looking to quit!
Since California has been on a financial decline for years, it’s easy to see why our government would leap at the chance to get their hands on our money by any means possible. However, it gets even more sinister: The two biggest supporters of Prop 56 were Philip Morris USA and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Two of the largest Big Tobacco companies spent MILLIONS of dollars to get this proposition to pass — thereby ensuring that they’d wipe out the vaping competition.
Our vaping freedoms are quickly being taken away by our own government and Big Tobacco itself!
It Isn’t Just in America
This is primarily due to the massive amount of misconceptions about vaping, pushed by Big Tobacco itself.
While the truth is out there for those willing to look for it, most would rather sit back and absorb the lies being told to them by the mainstream media.
Well, for those of you who prefer watching rather than reading, PragerU put out this lovely video laying down the FACTS about vaping (be sure to show it to all your naysaying friends!):
Death to Vaping Could Mean the Death of Billions
A potential one billion lives could be saved by vaping EACH year, if smokers transitioned from cigarettes to vape products.
However, if vaping products continue to be regulated as tobacco products — and more and more vape companies go out of business, or their products get too expensive or difficult to obtain — that could mean billions of lives LOST.
Vaping is by far the BEST form of tobacco harm reduction that’s come out in years. It’s already saved thousands of lives, and could easily save thousands more.
However, it won’t stand a chance without OUR help. As vapers, or friends of vapers, we need to stand up and SPEAK OUT. We need to fight back, bash the misconceptions, and show the world what “vape life” is truly about: LIFE.
Pay attention to the laws in your states and VOTE to have them changed. As Americans, we HAVE the power to get our freedom back!
In the meantime, share this post — or write one of your own! — and get the word out about what’s going on as much as possible. Personally, I’m sick and tired of how my favorite hobby is being treated. Let’s end this together.
Until next time,
UPDATE: Since writing this post, San Francisco has BANNED all flavored e-liquids in their city, prohibition style. You can use this CASAA link to fight back and tell the San Fran officials that you DO NOT APPROVE of this move. It only takes a few seconds. Vapers, it’s time to unite!
